ASK THE TECH--WARMING UP MY CAR

Q: Should I warm up my car on cold mornings?

A: Newer vehicles were built with cold weather in mind and tend to warm up quickly, but there are a few things to keep in mind when dealing with cold weather. Besides wanting to warm the interior for you to be comfortable, there are some mechanical reasons why you should allow your vehicle to warm up for 1-2 minutes before starting to drive.  After leaving the oil sitting cold overnight it has the consistency of molasses.  Warming the vehicle allows the oil to reach its optimum viscosity and lubricate the engine.   Excessive idling is not great for your engine, so just a few minutes will do.  If your vehicle is kept in a garage you will want to be aware of the emissions that can be dangerous.
